Facts About the Indian Constitution that will leave you amazed! 

On 26th November, every year, Constitution Day is celebrated in India. But do you know, why? Well, on 26th November 1949, the Constitution of India was completed and two months later, it was enforced on 26th January 1950. You might know the laws written in the constitution but do you know anything interesting about its making? 

We all feel some kind of pride when talking about our country. So, we all should also know about our constitution and its laws. Now, did you know that the Indian Constitution is the longest constitution ever framed in the world? Well, yes! And if you didn’t know this, there are high chances that you don’t know the facts mentioned below. So, keep reading to know some interesting facts you probably didn’t know about our Constitution.

  1. Our constitution was not typed on a typewriter nor was it printed. It was completely written with human hands, that too by only one person, Prem Bihari Narain Raizada. He wrote the constitution in beautiful flowing Italic style in calligraphy. It took almost three years to complete the first draft.

2. The first draft was written in two languages- Hindi and English. This means that the members of the constituent assembly had to sign two different copies of the constitution. This much of writing made our constitution one of the longest in the world. At present, it has a Preamble, 22 parts with 448 articles, 12 schedules, 5 appendices, and 105 amendments.

3. Each page of the original constitution was decorated with paintings, drawings, and sketches by the famous artists of Shantiniketan. Nandlal Bose and Beohar Rammanohar are a few names who contributed to the decoration of the original copy.

4. Around 2000 amendments were made to the very first draft of the constitution. At present, there have been around 105 amendments in the constitution, making it successfully stand by the span of over 65 years.

5. The Indian constitution is often called Bag Of Borrowings. It is because our constitution has borrowed several provisions from several countries. The idea of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity comes from the French constitution. The five-year plan concept was borrowed from the Constitution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Many such ideas have been borrowed from countries like Germany, the US, and Japan too.

6. The Constituent Assembly was the first Parliament of Independent India and this assembly met on 9 December 1946, for the very first time.

7. The two original copies of the Indian constitution, which are in Hindi and English, are still preserved in the Library of Parliament in special helium-filled cases.

8. The day our constitution came into effect was the same day the National Emblem of India was adopted. This means that our Constitution was not the only thing that officially came into existence on 26th January 1950.
