Record: Indore the only city in Central India creating 31 Green Corridors in 29 months
Carving its name again in the history in terms of organ donation, multiple green corridors were prepared for the 31st time in Indore on Tuesday for speedy transportation of vital organs of 58-year-old man. With this, Indore has become the only city in Central India to make a record of creating 31 ‘Green Corridors’ in two and half years to save several lives.
Two kidneys of brain dead Lalchand Kigrani, a resident of Dwarkapuri, were transported from Choithram Hospital to Greater Kailash Hospital and Apollo Hospital, respectively while his liver was transplanted to a patient in Choithram Hospital on Tuesday evening.
According to the secretary of Indore Society for Organ Donation, Dr. Sanjay Dixit, “Electrician by profession, Kingrani was admitted to Choithram Hospital after having brain hemorrhage on March 10. He was declared brain dead initially on Tuesday morning at 5: 54 am and 1:22 pm for the second time by the doctors.”
His kidneys were transported and transplanted successfully in Greater Kailash Hospital and Apollo Hospital while his liver was transported to a patient in Choithram Hospital. “Donation of organs was done according to the waiting list of the patients. His heart cannot be donated as it was not fit for donation. Skin donation of the patient was also done but his cornea couldn’t be donated as his family members didn’t want to donate it,” Dr. Dixit added.
Muskan Group’s Jeetu Bagani said “Both the corridors were created at the same time. One was created at the stretch of 10.9 kilometers from Choithram Hospital to Apollo Hospital while another was created for Greater Kailash Hospital at the stretch of 6.8 kilometers. Ambulances carrying the organs reached the hospitals in 9 minutes and 11 minutes respectively.”
Preparations for the corridor started from Tuesday noon and it was successful when the ambulances left the hospital at 5:.30 pm and later the doctors left the hospital, escorted by a police van.
New lease of life to many
Kingrani’s kidney was transplanted to 44-year-old Sunil Mehra, a resident of Indore, who was suffering from decompensate liver disease while one of the kidneys were transplanted to Ritcha Gandhi of Indore, who was suffering from a chronic kidney disorder and was on dialysis from June 2012. Similarly, another kidney was transplanted to Abdul Majid, a resident of Sanawad, who was also suffering from a chronic kidney disorder.
Myths still persist
Indore has created history as the green corridors were prepared for the 31st time but myths about organs donation and superstition still persist among people due to which cornea of the patients couldn’t be donated. While sons of Kignrani, Vishal, Vicky and Ashok, were ready to donate his organs, one of the women in the family refused to donate the cornea. “She was not convinced over cornea donation as she still believes that cornea of the body helps the soul to travel for life and so. We tried to convince her a lot but in vain. At last, we couldn’t preserve his cornea which can give new lease of life to at least two people” Bagani said.
