Indore, also known as the “Mini Mumbai,” is a city that is steeped in history and culture. This city not only disposed of the garbage seen on the road but also washed away the stigma that was attached to the city due to the historic buildings that were suffering from the floods. In the last one year, the effort to preserve not one but almost all the historical buildings here have come to fruition, which has also attracted tourists from India and abroad. How sensitive the city is towards beautifying and preserving this heritage can be gauged from the fact that the Department of Archeology, Smart City Company, Indore Development Authority and Tourism Department together did this work.

Rajwada

Rajwada, the heart of the city, has once again been painted in the color of its old splendor. The building has got the same glow as it was at the time of construction, so after repairs, the walls have also bloomed. The Rajwada Palace is a seven-story palace that was built in the mid-18th century by the Holkars. The palace is a perfect blend of European, Mughal, and Maratha architectural styles. The palace served as the residence of the Holkar rulers, and now it serves as a museum showcasing the history and culture of the region.

Rajwada, which was set on fire three times, remained in bad shape for years. The responsibility of conservation of the Rajwada was taken up by the Smart City in 2018 and targeted to be opened by 2023 for tourists. The conservation of Rajwada was completed at a cost of about Rs 23 crore. Its beauty was recreated with 500 cubic meters of wood. Now the Archeology Department is going to build an art gallery here where tourists can get to know the history of Holkar period even more closely.

Gandhi Hall

The beautiful and luxurious building was built in the city during the British era, which is now known as Gandhi Hall, has now started to look as beautiful as before. Art-culture, social and political equations have been made in the courtyard of this heritage, which has been a witness to the freedom struggle. In 1904, Gandhi Hall was built at a cost of about Rs 10. crore, which is now further renovated suiting the modern times, its patronage not only has the recent renovation, but also an open theatre for theatre workers and now there is an attempt to preserve scenes related to the life of Mahatma Gandhi.

Lal Bagh Palace

The Lal Baag Palace is another magnificent palace in Indore, built in 1921. The palace is a fusion of Indian and European architectural styles and served as the residence of the Holkar rulers. The palace now houses a museum displaying a vast collection of artifacts, including paintings, furniture, and sculptures.

Krishnapura Chhatri

The Krishnapura Chhatri is a beautiful monument built in 1899. It is a perfect example of Maratha architecture and is dedicated to the Holkar rulers who were instrumental in its construction. The monument has a dome-shaped structure and intricate carvings on its walls.

Annapurna Temple

The Annapurna Temple is a famous temple in Indore dedicated to the goddess Annapurna. It was built-in the early 18th century by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar. The temple has a unique architecture with ornate pillars, arches, and a dome-shaped roof.

Increased number of tourists

After the preservation of the city’s heritage, the number of tourists coming here has also increased. At present, Rajwada has an average of 1,000 visitors per day and Lalbagh Palace has 300 visitors per day.

Efforts for sustainable conservation

The historical heritage of the city has been preserved. Now a framework is being prepared for how to make them permanent patrons. For this, opinion is also being held by the public. The effort is to implement such a scheme that it is also protected, tourists can also come here and earn money so that the conservation expenses can be borne.
