India’s largest medical entrance examination is set for a major transformation. From 2027, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) is likely to be conducted entirely in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode, replacing the traditional pen-and-paper format. According to reports, the examination will be spread over five to six days across more than 1,000 exam centres nationwide, marking one of the biggest reforms in the history of NEET.
The proposed changes come in the wake of the 2024 paper leak controversy, which raised serious concerns about the security and integrity of the examination process. By shifting to CBT mode, authorities aim to make the exam more transparent, secure, and efficient for the nearly 25 lakh candidates who appear for NEET UG every year.
What Will Change?
Instead of conducting the examination on a single day, NEET UG is expected to be held in multiple sessions over six days, similar to other large-scale entrance exams such as JEE Main. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is planning to establish over 1,000 verified computer-based examination centres, each meeting strict standards for infrastructure, technology, and security.
The multi-day format is expected to reduce logistical challenges while strengthening monitoring mechanisms and minimizing the risk of question paper leaks.
Why Is the Shift Important?
NEET UG is the gateway to admission into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other undergraduate medical programmes across India. With approximately 1.08 lakh MBBS seats available—including around 56,000 government and 52,000 private medical college seats—ensuring a fair and reliable examination process is critical.
The proposed CBT format is also expected to improve exam administration by enabling better surveillance, faster processing of responses, and enhanced security through digital systems.

Although the new format is expected to be implemented from NEET UG 2027, students preparing for future examinations should begin familiarizing themselves with computer-based testing. Practicing mock tests on digital platforms, improving time management, and becoming comfortable with online exam interfaces will help candidates adapt smoothly if the reform is officially implemented.
