In these turbulent times the world is going through it’s quite essential to know that what challenge we are exactly facing. Corona viruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

ORIGIN
On December 31 of last year, Chinese authorities alerted the World Health Organization of an outbreak of a novel strain of corona virus causing severe illness, which was subsequently named SARS-CoV-2. The virus closely resembled to a series of Corona viruses present in Bats and pangolins through which they were likely to have transmitted to human hosts. Once the virus attached itself to human host, it was quick to multiply, transmitting from one person to other through respiratory droplets produced while coughing or sneezing, touching of contaminated surfaces and then touching one’s face. Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus (the name provided by WHO) will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness says WHO reports. The incubation period, i.e. the time it takes for the virus to activate and for the patient to develop symptoms, may range from 6 to 14 days.

TREATMENT
As of now, no vaccines are available although ongoing research for the same is in progress. A vaccine is unlikely to emerge before 2021 earliest, till then the only treatment available for this virus is to treat the symptoms that emerge because of it and give body time to produce anti-bodies and fight with the virus on its own. As the virus affects lungs the most, people infected with it might need supportive care to help them in breathing.

- It is also recommended to stay 1 meter or more away from people infected with COVID-19 who are showing symptoms to reduce the risk of infection through respiratory droplets.
- Wear face masks if you are sick to prevent transmission to those around you. If you are NOT sick you do not need to wear a face mask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a face mask). Face masks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.
- Regularly clean and disinfect all the surfaces and objects that come in frequent contact of people like doorknobs, remotes, mobile phones, light switches, counter tops, faucets, sinks etc.
