Cyber Crime: Reasons, Causes, and Precautions You Should Know About.

The use of Digital technology and Digital media today has increased to a huge extent. Be it any city, any place, any generation, digital technology, and modern media have made their space in everyone’s life today and so is the case with Indore. People of the city have indulged so much in the digital world that looking happy virtually has become more important than being happy in real life. With this extent of digital engagement, come the consequences too- Digital fraud, Digital bullying, Online scams, and more. Indore is developing into a hub for several online crimes with every passing day.

What Kind of Frauds is Indore Facing?

On talking to the Cyber Cell SP, Mr. Jitendra Singh sir, he says that the increase in the various cybercrimes is obvious. Since digital technology is being used today for almost every purpose & cause, the wrong usage of the same is possible and would only increase in the future. Mr. Singh states that crimes on social media relating to fake accounts are majorly registered in the cyber cell. Most complaints involve fake accounts on Facebook, Instagram, etc. which showcase obscene pictures & videos of victims or demand money through fake identities from friends & relatives. Complaints have also been registered for fake Customer Care websites on Google. Various frauds online also use remote sharing apps like AirDroid and AnyDesk to accomplish their fraud. Many people from Indore have also been victims of matrimonial frauds, investment-related and online sextortion frauds.

How to Stay Away from Frauds?

Online fraud is something that can happen to anyone who uses digital technology. Mr. Jitendra Singh believes that the best way to avoid these frauds is not to believe any unauthorized, unknown, or local links, messages, or sites in the digital world. We all often get random messages on our phone numbers, right? For instance, Turn your sim card 4G to 5G in just one step, Win one lakh by answering this question, and this list goes on. You have surely received such a message at least once on your mobile. It is recommended to ignore these messages and even block the numbers on multiple activities.

Moreover, any unknown calls from anyone should be ignored at all costs. If it is an authorized call or if one feels that it might be, one should cross-check it before sharing any kind of information, be it personal or public. There are majorly three reasons why even the most literate people fall into these digital traps- Fear, Lack of Information, and Greed.

Online Gaming, Social Media, and Kids

As much as adults are becoming victims of online fraud, so are the kids today. Social media bullying and Online Gaming fraud have also increased in the city. Kids lose their parents’ money in online gaming; take up unusual & unsafe steps to gain fame on social media which even results in the loss of lives sometimes. So, parents who give access to their mobile to their kids should make sure to check on their activities regularly. A major role in guiding the kids is played by the guardian/parents, teachers, and friends. Parents should know about the kid’s friends and his activities. Even after all the precautions, if anything uncertain happens, one should not panic. The nearest cyber cell or police station should be preferred for registering a complaint.

National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

If it is not possible to complain physically, one can register the complaint through the Government’s online portal- www.cybercrime.gov.in. If one has faced any kind of financial loss or online financial fraud, here’s the helpline number where the fraud transaction details can be shared for seeking help- 155260. There are so many ways in which a victim of online fraud can seek help. However, taking care of your security and being alert is the most important. Be it your real life or virtual; digital money or plastic, one should never take risks in it.
