All you need to know about the Royal History of Indore’s Holkars.

Indore’s heritage has been rich and ancient, with remarkable rulers that marked the past of the city. With Indore’s heart at Rajwada, curiosity does spike to know more about the royal family that ruled and won the hearts of the city centuries ago. The Holkar dynasty has been ruling over Malwa with Indore city as its capital since 1728, when Subedar Malhar Rao Holkar conquered the land to fulfill Chhatrapati Shivaji’s vision of a Hindavi Swaraj, spreading the Maratha rule all over.

Holkars came to Indore and became the beloved of the common people, their rule dedicated to serve their people and to work for their benefit. It has often been a predicament of tourists and visitors as to why the royal Holkar palace is so plaintive, almost defying its royal occupancy. The reason behind it, as was narrated by Shrimant Bhushan Singh Raje Holkar, was that the royal family reimbursed the majority of its funds for the people, taking up the bare minimum for themselves. It wasn’t in vain that the people of their state were so happy and content with their rulers. Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar succeeded the throne after Subedar Malhar Rao passed away in 1766, moving her residence to live in Maheshwar on the banks of Narmada.
