Indore Metro - Indore Talk

Indore’s Metro project history has been full of turbulences with every possible roadblock witnessed by the project authorities. When the initial proposal for the Indore Metro was proposed in 2013 the idea could not gain flame due to the onset of elections and the Japanese company who was initially investing in the project backed off. Ultimately in 2016, after the Madhya Pradesh government got elected, the project was retrieved from the backlogs of the government files and gained momentum. A survey of Indore was conducted by a consultant company following the submission of the survey report. The project finally gained approval from the Madhya Pradesh government in 2017 and the central government in 2018. Finally, in 2019 New Development Bank granted the Indore Metro Project a loan of 3200 crores to begin construction. This prompted the formation of Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation a joint venture with fifty-fifty percent partnership of the Madhya Pradesh Government and the Government of India. The initial deadline for completing Phase 1 of the Metro project was set for December 2019 but delays caused the construction for Phase 1 to finally begin in September 2019, between ISBT to Mumtaz Bagh Colony that is 5.25 Km long and a part of Route 3 amongst the four routes initially planned for the city metro.

With the completion of the Indore Metro, the heavy traffic situation and pollution levels of the city shall be less prominent. With the rapid growth in the city’s population and the rampant urbanization, Indore is predicted to have a population of more than 50 Lakh people in the coming years. This amount of people who would require daily commute cannot be dependent on personal transport or the IBus hence Indore Metro is expected to take away an immense load of regularly commuting passengers. With 2024 as the deadline for the completion of the first phase of the Indore Metro Project, the coming years would require patience and hard work to reach the end goal. As eager as the Indoris are for the Indore Metro to begin, the Indore Metro Project Authorities have to be dedicated and entirely invested in completing the project on time, keeping in mind the previous interruptions and delays.
