⚡ The Gist
Indore’s historic Central Museum closes to visitors from October 26, 2026, for 157 days as an extensive renovation and modernisation project gathers pace. The project, estimated at ₹12.75 crore, aims to upgrade the museum’s infrastructure, improve visitor facilities and bring its exhibition spaces closer to international standards.
The museum is expected to reopen around March 31, 2027, subject to the progress of the work. The temporary closure also allows construction to proceed more quickly while reducing safety risks for visitors.
The Story
Located in Indore, the Central Museum preserves an important part of the region’s archaeological, artistic and cultural heritage. Its collections include ancient sculptures, rare coins, inscriptions and other historical artefacts that offer insights into the history of Malwa and the wider region.
The ongoing renovation focuses on upgrading the museum’s infrastructure and creating a more comfortable experience for visitors. The project includes a lift, improved washrooms, a cafeteria, ramps, storage facilities and upgraded galleries. Plans also include an interpretation centre, a souvenir shop, modern display systems, improved lighting, CCTV cameras, an information centre, rest areas, a landscaped garden, an auditorium and an exhibition hall.
The museum’s boundary wall forms part of the wider development work, while improvements to storage facilities aim to support the safe preservation of its valuable collections. Some ancient sculptures have already been shifted to safer locations under the supervision of departmental officials to protect them during construction.
The decision to close the museum temporarily follows concerns that regular visitor movement is slowing down construction and creating potential safety risks. Keeping the premises closed allows the remaining work to progress with fewer interruptions.
The renovation also forms part of preparations to improve heritage infrastructure ahead of the upcoming Simhastha. Once the project is completed, visitors are expected to benefit from better accessibility, upgraded displays and additional facilities that make exploring the museum’s collections easier.
The reopening timeline remains dependent on the completion of the renovation work, with March 31, 2027, serving as the anticipated target.
