The Story

For Indore, the monsoon has become a story of waiting for the rain that hasn’t arrived yet.

August is traditionally one of the city’s important rainfall months. But this year, more than half the month has passed with less than two inches of rain recorded during August. The city has received around 18 inches cumulatively during the current monsoon, while more than 20 inches is still required to reach the seasonal average.

The numbers become more significant when compared with Indore’s normal rainfall pattern. The city generally receives around 10 to 11 inches of rainfall during August, with roughly 12–13 rainy days. Historically, however, August rainfall has varied dramatically. In 1944, Indore recorded a remarkable 28 inches in August, while the city also witnessed an extraordinary single-day rainfall event in August 2020, when around 10.5 inches fell within 24 hours.

This year’s situation is therefore not simply about whether it rains. It is about when, how much and how effectively that rain is captured. A few intense rainfall events could significantly reduce the deficit, but they could also create another familiar urban problem, waterlogging if the city’s drainage and stormwater systems cannot handle sudden volumes of water. That makes the remaining monsoon period particularly important for Indore.

According to weather experts quoted in the report, a new system developing over the Bay of Bengal could strengthen rainfall activity across Madhya Pradesh. Its influence may also extend towards western Madhya Pradesh, including Indore.

At the same time, the latest meteorological outlook shows that rainfall opportunities remain possible over Indore in the coming days, although rainfall distribution can remain highly uneven.  And this is where Indore’s larger water story comes in. Less rainfall means less natural groundwater recharge. For a rapidly urbanizing city increasingly dependent on groundwater and external water sources, every missed rainfall event matters.

But rainfall alone cannot solve the problem. The city also needs to ensure that when the rain finally arrives, as much of it as possible is retained, harvested and recharged instead of simply flowing away through roads and drains. Rainwater harvesting, recharge wells, functioning stormwater infrastructure and protection of natural drainage channels therefore become even more important during a rainfall-deficit year.

The remaining 45 days of monsoon could still change the picture dramatically. But relying on a late-season recovery also highlights a larger lesson for the city, water planning cannot begin when the taps start running dry. It has to begin before the first raindrop falls.

A rainfall deficit is not just a weather statistic. It affects groundwater, agriculture, water supply and the city’s long-term ecological security. And if a sudden heavy spell finally arrives, the city could face the opposite problem—too much water in too little time, followed by too little water when summer returns.

That’s why Indore’s water strategy cannot be only about praying for more rain. It must be about capturing every possible drop, recharging the ground, protecting natural water channels and planning for the next summer while dealing with this monsoon.

Because the real measure of a good monsoon should not simply be how much rain falls over Indore but how much of that rain stays in Indore.
