Markets of Indore filled with happy customers and shopkeepers this Diwali.

Diwali has always been a festival filled with prosperity and wealth for everyone, providing plenty of opportunities for business owners in all fields to earn their keep, gaining maximum profits in five days than the entire year. This Diwali was especially strenuous, keeping in mind the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Shopkeepers had already suffered from heavy losses due to the long periods of lockdown and were worried that the same lack in business would carry on to the most prosperous festival of the year, but that didn’t happen.

Dhanteras in Indore this year managed to restore the glory of the markets that suffered due to the pandemic. The Bartan Bazaar and Sarafa Market which are centuries-old markets of Indore, specializing in utensils and gold respectively, manage to do a business of more than 50 crores in a single day and this year is no different. The markets are dazzling with shop decorations and the hustle-bustle of buyers who swarm the cramped streets with masks, although heavily violating the social distancing norms. The two days of Dhanteras will divide the crowd into two, which is a relief during the pandemic.

Other markets including electronics and automobiles have also flourished with people compensating for the reduced expenditure the entire year. The markets are abuzz with interested buyers, helping the businessmen to recover from the losses they procured due to the pandemic. The October National figures prove to be encouraging as well with sales in passenger Vehicles reaching 3, 10,294, for Two-wheelers 20,53,814 and Motorcycle sales reaching 13, 82,749.

With this, new ventures have come forward to support local production and people who own small scale business and have suffered from lack of sales. Lok Sanskriti Manch’s Ekta Mehta came up with one such innovative venture in association with MP Shankar Lalwani. The effort was to sell Diwali products produced with eco-friendly material like cow dung. The idea popularized amongst the Indoris, with an increasing number of orders arriving and providing employment to more than 25 families. The word of mouth publicity carried this forward to other cities and states like Nagpur, Gujarat, Delhi, Bhopal, and even nearby Mhow through virtual fairs and other Samaritans who wished to contribute to the effort. All these products are natural and completely recyclable and after use, they can be turned into manure too. The price of products starts from Rs 3 to Rs 100. As many as 25,000 cow-dung lamps have been sold in other states and cities of Madhya Pradesh, while over 10,000 cow-dung lamps were sold in Indore itself.
