⚡ Quick Take
With India’s investor base expanding rapidly, investment fraud is emerging as a major concern particularly for first-time and retail investors.
To strengthen investor awareness and help people make informed decisions, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey has launched Project Jagrook, a nationwide investor-awareness initiative focused on financial literacy, fraud prevention and responsible investing.
The New Risk: Fake Investments That Never Reach the Market
One of the concerns highlighted by SEBI is that some frauds may appear to be investment opportunities without actually involving any genuine securities-market investment.
Victims may be approached through fake individuals, misleading platforms or fraudulent mobile applications and persuaded to transfer money. The funds can then move through mule accounts, making recovery difficult once the fraud is discovered.
For investors, the first line of defence is therefore verification Who are you investing with? Is the entity regulated? And through which platform are you being contacted?
SEBI’s Warning to Investors
SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey has cautioned investors against relying on:
- Anonymous investment tips
- Unverified financial influencers
- Exaggerated or unrealistic return claims
- Investment products they do not understand
- Unregulated entities or channels
The regulator’s message is straightforward: understand an investment before putting money into it. Investors have also been advised to diversify and not assume that a fixed return automatically means an investment is risk-free.
What Is Project Jagrook?
Project Jagrook is SEBI’s nationwide investor-awareness initiative designed to take financial education and fraud-prevention information closer to investors.
The campaign is planned across multiple channels, including television, radio, print, cinema, digital platforms and social media, with communication in English, Hindi and regional languages. The programme is scheduled to continue through March 2027.
The broader philosophy is to take investor education to the investor, rather than waiting for investors to seek it themselves.
Reaching Young & New Investors
The initiative also places emphasis on educational institutions.
Under the MUST, Mentoring of University and College Students through Trainers programme, teachers, staff and senior students will receive training to help spread financial-awareness messages among students.
This is significant as a new generation of Indians is entering financial markets through increasingly accessible digital platforms.
A New WhatsApp Channel for Investor Awareness
SEBI has also announced its presence on WhatsApp as part of its investor-awareness efforts.
The channel will initially focus on disseminating investor education and awareness messages, with plans to make the communication more interactive over time.
SEBI’s broader initiative also includes a proposed National Securities Market Awareness Curriculum and a free investor-awareness test to support structured financial education.
Why This Matters for India’s Growing Investor Base
India now has around 15 crore unique investors, according to the information shared at the launch, with the investor base growing rapidly. But greater access to markets also means greater exposure to misleading information and fraud.
The challenge is therefore no longer simply getting people to participate in financial markets.
It is ensuring that they participate with sufficient knowledge, verification and awareness of risk.
🎙️ Indore Talk Business Take
Investing has become easier than ever. A smartphone, an app and an internet connection can put financial markets within reach of almost anyone. But easy access does not automatically mean informed investing.
As investment frauds become more sophisticated, the most important investment decision may sometimes happen before the money is invested Who are you trusting with your money?
Project Jagrook puts the focus where it matters on awareness before investment, verification before trust and understanding before action.
For every new investor, the message is simple Don’t invest because someone told you to. Invest because you understand it.
