Indore's Innovative Campaigns providing extra edge for Swachh Survekshan 2022.
Every Indori probably knows about the ‘Red Light On, Engine Off’ campaign of the city by now. For those of you who don’t know about it yet, it is a campaign started to improve the AQI of Indore. Numerous organizations have taken part in this campaign wherein they have been given different squares of Indore to volunteer & appeal to people to switch their engines off on the red lights. The ultimate aim of this campaign is to bring the AQI of Indore down to between 0-50. But do you know whose idea it was to start this initiative? Well, it is the Member of Parliament, Mr. Shankar Lalwani who initiated this idea in the first place which was followed by the support of the commissioner and the Indore Municipal Corporation.
On talking to Mr. Lalwani, he stated about the worsening condition of Delhi’s air quality and how people there are suffering from a bad AQI. When Mr. Lalwani noticed the abundant number of vehicles standing with their engines on in the red light on the major squares of Indore, he realized that so much of the pollution in Indore was caused by those vehicles. Now when Indore is all set and prepared to top the list of the cleanest cities for the 6th time in a row, Mr. Lalwani thinks that now is the best time to make efforts to improve the AQI of Indore. With this aim, he, along with the major authorities of Indore, has taken numerous initiatives, one of which is the ‘Red Light On, Engine Off’ campaign.
Other Initiatives for the Cause
Along with the campaign to improve the AQI of the city, Mr. Lalwani has been supporting and has started many other campaigns to develop an eco-friendly style of living for the people of Indore. One such campaign is the ‘Main Hun Jholadhaari Indori’ wherein the authority’s aim is to cut off the use of plastic from the city & replace it with the use of Jholas, that is cotton carry bags as much as possible. The Indore Municipal Corporation is making Jholas and will be distributing them to the public. The major aim of this campaign is to make people aware of the over-usage of plastic and motivate them to use cotton carry bags.
Indore has always been ahead in starting initiatives for the good of the environment and has always succeeded with the support of the public. The authority needs the support of the public this time too, to make Indore a better place in all senses. As the citizens of the city, it is our responsibility to help these great campaigns succeed and get the tag of the Cleanest City of India once again. Let’s try to avoid the use of plastic as much as possible from now on and switch to cotton carry bags every time we step out. Moreover, if you step out with any vehicle, make sure that you turn your engine off whenever under the red light on signals. Let’s work our best in making Indore a better city with every passing day.
