These 6 Women of Indore decides to take a Male-Dominated Profession!

Making a change in the Society and breaking the typecast in a male-dominated profession, 6 women took a decision to ferry passengers in battery-operated vehicles and it changed their life forever. “My husband and in-laws threw me out as I gave birth to a baby girl. After getting divorce around four years ago, my daughter and I were living with my parents in Bhagirathpura,” said Vandana Verma (33), adding that her decision to become an e-auto rickshaw driver helped her become self-sufficient and also make a statement before her in-laws and those who discriminate on basis of gender.

Verma is among first six e-auto rickshaw drivers of, who mustered the courage to choose a male-dominated profession as their career to support their families financially. “Their poor financial condition and belief to do something to get a respectable employment was the common thing among all these six women e-auto rickshaw drivers. Our NGO trained them and helped in getting light motor vehicle’s driving license along with a loan from the bank to buy the passenger vehicles,” Radha Bharati from Pushpanji Training Centre run by Magic of Hope welfare society.

She added that Pinki Basotiya (35), who chose e-auto driver as a profession, has the responsibility of three children including one handicapped daughter while Draupadi Verma (40) drives the battery-operated vehicle to support her husband and four girl children. Archana Lagas (divorcee) has a responsibility to raise her daughter while Meena (35) assists her husband and two children with her income.

“Madhuri Newaskar (26), a graduate, used to teach students to earn her livelihood but it wasn’t enough to make ends meet. She then decided to become an e-auto rickshaw driver and now, she is able to assist the family financially,” Bharati said. Under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission, (IMC) helped all six women in availing loans and subsidy of Rs 35,000.
