A New Chapter for Indian Currency

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is moving closer to introducing polymer (plastic) currency notes in India. As part of a pilot project, RBI’s currency printing subsidiary has initiated the process to procure specialised polymer sheets for trial production, with ₹10 and ₹20 notes expected to be the first denominations under testing. However, existing paper (cotton-based) notes will continue to remain valid, and there is no nationwide replacement announced yet.

Why Switch to Polymer Notes?

Unlike traditional cotton-based banknotes, polymer notes are made from a durable plastic substrate that offers several advantages:

  • Last significantly longer than conventional notes
  • Resistant to water, dirt, and moisture
  • Harder to counterfeit due to advanced security features
  • Lower replacement costs over their lifecycle
  • Better suited for heavy circulation

More than 50 countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK, and Singapore, already use polymer banknotes successfully.

What Is RBI Planning?

RBI’s printing arm, Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Pvt. Ltd. (BRBNMPL), has floated a global tender seeking suppliers for polymer substrates embedded with advanced security features.

The initial pilot is likely to focus on ₹10 and ₹20 notes, which experience the highest circulation and wear. The outcome of the field trials will determine whether polymer notes are introduced on a larger scale in the coming years.

What This Means for Citizens?

There is no need to exchange your existing currency notes. All currently valid Indian banknotes will continue to remain legal tender.

The polymer note project is still in its testing phase, and any large-scale rollout will happen only after successful trials and official approval. The RBI has also clarified that rumours claiming paper notes will be withdrawn immediately are false.

Why It Matters?

For businesses, banks, retailers, and consumers, polymer currency could mean fewer damaged notes in circulation, reduced handling costs, improved durability, and stronger protection against counterfeiting.

While India has become a global leader in digital payments through UPI, cash continues to play an important role in the economy. Modernising physical currency is therefore another step toward building a more secure and efficient financial system.
