India starts Human trials of COVID-19 Vaccines ‘COVAXIN’, 15th Aug deadline.
The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) announced India to be ready for COVID-19 Vaccines- COVAXIN to go for human trials. Twelve leading institutes of the country have been selected for trials, including AIIMS in Delhi & Patna. Two leading Pharmaceutical companies of the country, Bharat Biotech & Ahmadabad based company Zydus Cadila Health Care Limited Drug Controller General of India have been selected for the task of preparing the vaccines to be ready for human trials. According to the experts, the vaccine trials will be held in three phases, with the first phase having minimum people tested for safety. In a total of 375 people that are supposed to be taken for the trial of COVAXIN, the first stage trials shall be conducted on 125 people. After giving them the first dose of the vaccine, these people will then be taken under observation for 14 days following which a second dose shall be given with another 14 days observation period. Based on this, the first stage of trials shall last for 28 days and will be completed by 4th August 2020.
After the success of the first stage, in the second and third stages, the trials will be conducted under the supervision of doctors in AIIMS, technicians from the vaccine-making companies, along with the Central Health Department officials and a team of scientists. An estimated amount of about three months shall be taken to complete the entire clinical trial. The two companies that were selected to conduct the trials for the COVID-19 vaccines first tested their vaccines on mice and rabbits which yielded success. After this, ICMR permitted them to move ahead with human trials for their respective vaccines. Bharat Biotech Company has made vaccines for polio, rabies, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, rotavirus, and Zika virus, which have been exported to countries all over the world.
Although the Indian government has as of yet not announced any official date for the vaccine to be available, a tentative possibility of solid results regarding the vaccine is said to be available by 15th August, India’s day of Independence.
