Students seeking financial support through the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the 2026–27 academic year have received additional time to complete their applications. The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for submitting NMMSS applications through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) to September 30, 2026.
Application Deadline Extended
The earlier deadline for NMMSS applications was August 31. With the extension, eligible students now have until September 30 to complete their fresh or renewal applications on the NSP. The extension is particularly significant for students who may have missed the earlier deadline or have not yet completed the application process.
Students applying for the scheme are required to complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the National Scholarship Portal before submitting their scholarship application.
Who Can Benefit From NMMSS?
NMMSS is designed to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and help prevent students from dropping out after Class VIII.
The scheme provides ₹12,000 per year to selected students. It offers around one lakh fresh scholarships annually to eligible Class 9 students, with the scholarship continuing through Classes 10 to 12 subject to the required academic conditions.
The scheme is applicable to students studying in government, government-aided and local-body schools. Among the eligibility conditions, parental annual income should generally not exceed ₹3.5 lakh, while the required academic criteria also apply.
Verification Deadlines Also Extended
Submitting the application is only the first step. Scholarship applications must subsequently go through institutional and district-level verification.
For 2026–27, the revised schedule is:
- Student application: September 30, 2026
- Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification: October 15, 2026
- District Nodal Officer (L2) verification: October 31, 2026
The National Scholarship Portal currently lists NMMSS as open for the 2026–27 academic year with the September 30 application deadline.
An Opportunity Students Should Not Miss
Scholarships can make a meaningful difference in a student’s ability to continue education, particularly for families where financial constraints can influence decisions after middle school.
The extension of the NMMSS deadline provides eligible students with another opportunity but waiting until the final days could create problems if documents, OTR registration or institutional verification are incomplete.
