The 5 steps of IMC to pack a solid "Swachhta ka Punch" in Swachh Survekshan 2021.

Indore Municipal Corporation has planned to leave no stones unturned to reclaim its four-year title of the cleanest city of India for this year as well. As the sole winner for four consecutive years, all eyes are glued on IMC for this year’s preparations for the Survekshan. IMC has also doubled its efforts in cleaning, waste management, and segregation and making the city beautiful for this year’s evaluation. The city of Indore boasts a 100% sewerage system with total recycling of treated sewage, 100% solid waste management system with total recycling of waste products, effective drainage system coupled with water harvesting of rainfall run-off, paving or grassing of raw surfaces between road edges and building lines, daily sweeping of roads and streets ensuring zero spread of solid waste. Housing country’s first automated plant to process 1200 tonnes of waste daily, converting 250 tonnes of wet waste into 1400 kg of bio CNG daily, reduction in waste generation up to 45 MLD, IT-enabled monitoring of door-to-door collection of waste from 5.2 lakh households daily, are some of the efforts that IMC has actively taken up for the cleanliness. This year too, for the Swachhta Ka Punch, IMC has initiated some unique steps for proper waste management, these include-

Covid-19 Waste Collection

One of the most phenomenal achievements of IMC during the times of a pandemic was perhaps the innovative, smart, and well-planned out Covid-19 waste collection. IMC declared separate Covid-19 waste-bin identified by the color yellow, separate collection of this waste in separate vehicles and more importantly ensuring that the cleanliness workers are well protected with proper PPE kits to avoid infection. COVID waste is collected separately to keep it separate from the rest of the waste collected. For this, all the households have been asked to put their masks, gloves, medicine wrappers, face wipes, tissue paper in the yellow bin.

Six- Bin Waste Segregation

The city has now moved to six-bin segregation of waste at source or the household/commercial place level which include separate bins for dry waste, wet waste, plastic waste, e-waste, domestic sanitary waste, and domestic hazardous waste. The aim is to make recycling, reusing, and disposing of the waste faster and in a more organized way. On average, the per day waste generation by the city includes 530 tonnes of wet waste, 460 tonnes of dry waste, 14 tonnes of plastic waste, 2.5 tonnes of e-waste, 11 tonnes of sanitary waste, and 3.5 tonnes of hazardous waste. To deal with each kind of waste, the city has a separate system. The city has also been working on strategies to eliminate waste generation at the source itself and has been able to establish four wards as Zero-waste wards.

Cleaning Water Canals (Naala)

Indore Clean Naala

A cricket match began between politicians and government officers on a land emptied following the drying up of a naala at Kailash Park Colony on Sunday. This event took place to boost the morale of Indoris encouraging them to cleanse the city of the sewage naalas, projecting that it can be converted into useful land areas. Several of these naalas have been cleaned by the IMC and later the land used for organizing anniversary parties, Dangal, and cricket matches, etc.

Underground and Closed Sewerage Lines

Indore has invested vastly to ensure proper and complete treatment of wastewater for reuse. The water from treatment plants is then reused for cleaning of the city roads, supplied in public fountains, used to water roadside plants and trees, etc. this treated water is also majorly supplied for irrigation and thus assists in reducing the water problem, making water available for everyone.
