“When was the last time you heard absolutely nothing?”
No notification.
No music.
No conversation.
No television playing somewhere in the background.
Not even the urge to reach for your phone.
For most of us, silence has become strangely uncomfortable.
We wake up to alarms, travel with earphones, work around conversations and notifications, scroll during breaks, watch something while eating, and often fall asleep with a screen beside us.
Our surroundings are rarely quiet.
But more importantly, our minds rarely are.
Perhaps that’s why silence has always had a special place in spiritual traditions.
Not because sound is bad.
But because silence allows us to notice what noise keeps hiding.
When everything becomes quiet, we begin hearing things we usually avoid.
Our worries.
Our fears.
Our unanswered questions.
Our inner conflicts.
Even the truths we have been too busy to acknowledge.
And that can feel uncomfortable.
So we escape.
We pick up the phone.
Play some music.
Open social media.
Start another conversation.
Find something anything to occupy the mind.
Noise keeps us distracted. Silence makes us present.
And presence is where something deeper begins.
Think about some of life’s quietest moments.
Watching the sunrise.
Sitting inside a temple after everyone has left.
Listening to rain from your window.
Walking alone without headphones.
Closing your eyes after prayer.
Sitting beside someone you love without needing to speak.
Nothing dramatic happens in these moments.
Yet somehow, something inside us settles.
Because silence isn’t simply the absence of sound.
It is the presence of attention.
You don’t need to travel to the mountains or spend hours meditating to experience it.
Start with ten minutes.
No phone.
No music.
No podcast.
No conversation.
Just sit.
Breathe.
Notice your thoughts without immediately reacting to them.
At first, silence may feel empty.
Stay with it long enough, and you may discover that it isn’t empty at all.
It contains your thoughts.
Your emotions.
Your questions.
Your intuition.
Your awareness.
And perhaps, something beyond all of them.
In a world constantly asking us to speak, react, consume and respond, choosing silence can itself become a spiritual practice.
Because sometimes, we don’t need another answer.
We simply need enough silence to hear the answer already waiting within us.
🌿 Reflection
Ask yourself:
“When was the last time I sat in complete silence—not because I had nothing to do, but because I wanted to listen?”
The world will always have something to say.
Wisdom begins when you learn when not to listen.
