In a landmark move that could reshape the future of urban development in Central India, the Madhya Pradesh Government has officially issued the notification for the Ujjain–Indore Metropolitan Area.
Under the newly notified metropolitan region, a total of 2,781 villages across Indore and six surrounding districts have been included within the planning area. Among them, Indore district accounts for the largest share with 654 villages, highlighting the city’s central role in the region’s future growth strategy.
The creation of the metropolitan area is aimed at enabling more coordinated regional planning, improving infrastructure development, attracting investments, and preparing the region for future urban expansion. Instead of planning cities and surrounding rural areas separately, the new framework seeks to create an integrated approach to transportation, housing, industrial growth, public services, and economic development.
Urban experts believe the move could significantly boost connectivity between Indore, Ujjain, and neighboring growth centers while encouraging balanced development across the region. It is also expected to support large-scale infrastructure projects, industrial corridors, logistics hubs, and residential developments that require coordinated planning beyond municipal boundaries.
For the real estate sector, the notification could open new opportunities in emerging growth corridors, while businesses may benefit from improved connectivity and access to a larger economic ecosystem. At the same time, authorities will face the challenge of ensuring that rapid development remains sustainable and does not compromise environmental and agricultural interests.
The announcement reflects a broader shift in urban planning, where growth is increasingly being viewed from a regional perspective rather than being confined to individual city limits.
Could the Ujjain–Indore Metropolitan Area become Central India’s next major economic and urban powerhouse?
