Why Is Indore Second? Metropolitan Naming Dispute Reaches High Court

⚡The Gist: The controversy over naming the newly notified Ujjain-Indore Metropolitan Area has now reached the High Court. A petition has challenged the government’s notification, raising objections to placing Ujjain’s name before Indore despite Indore’s larger population, economic contribution, and complete inclusion within the metropolitan region.

The formation of the Ujjain-Indore Metropolitan Area has sparked a fresh debate, with the matter now reaching the High Court. A petition has been filed challenging the government’s notification regarding the metropolitan region and questioning why Indore was not given naming priority.

According to the petitioner, several legal and procedural aspects were allegedly overlooked during the formation of the metropolitan area. However, the primary concern remains the decision to place Ujjain’s name ahead of Indore in the official title.

The petition argues that Indore contributes the highest revenue to Madhya Pradesh and is widely recognized as the state’s economic capital. It further points out that 100% of Indore’s urban population falls within the metropolitan area, while only around 59% of Ujjain’s population is included.

The metropolitan region covers approximately 16,000 square kilometers and includes parts of six districts—Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Dhar, Shajapur, and adjoining areas. The state government has already issued a notification covering 38 tehsils and 2,781 villages within the proposed metropolitan zone.

While discussions around the region’s future development continue, concerns over the naming issue have gained momentum among sections of Indore’s citizens. Interestingly, public representatives have largely remained silent on the matter so far.

Names carry significance, especially when they represent regions that will shape the future of urban development. While the metropolitan area’s success will ultimately depend on infrastructure, governance, and economic growth, the ongoing debate reflects a larger sentiment about Indore’s identity and contribution to the state. The High Court’s observations may not only determine a naming dispute but could also influence how regional priorities are perceived in Madhya Pradesh’s evolving urban landscape.
