The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released fresh guidelines for implementing the Three-Language Policy under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, bringing clarity for students, parents, and schools. The board has confirmed that students currently studying in Class 10 will not be affected by the revised language framework and will continue under the existing rules.
The revised policy aims to ensure a smooth transition while emphasizing that no student should be disadvantaged because of the curriculum changes. The clarification comes after weeks of confusion regarding how the new language policy would impact students already enrolled in secondary classes.
What Changes Under the New Policy?
Beginning with the 2026–27 academic session, students entering Class 9 will study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages, in line with the recommendations of NEP 2020. However, CBSE has introduced transitional provisions so that students already progressing through the current system do not have to alter their academic plans midway.
The board has also provided a one-time relaxation for the current Class 9 batch, allowing eligible students to continue with their existing language combinations under specified guidelines.
Why the Clarification Matters?
The updated guidelines are intended to remove uncertainty among schools and families while ensuring a phased implementation of the new language framework. By protecting the interests of current students and introducing changes only for future batches, CBSE aims to balance educational reforms with academic continuity.

Educational reforms are most effective when they provide both clarity and continuity. CBSE’s latest guidelines demonstrate that while multilingual education remains a key objective of NEP 2020, students already preparing for board examinations should not face unnecessary disruptions. For future learners, the policy encourages stronger exposure to Indian languages, while current batches can complete their schooling without changing their academic roadmap.
