Studying for an international degree may soon become more accessible without leaving India. The Government of India has issued Letters of Intent (LoIs) to 15 foreign universities to establish campuses across the country, marking a significant step in the internationalization of higher education under the National Education Policy (NEP).
Most of these universities are expected to welcome their first batch of students from August 2026, offering globally recognized degrees while reducing the financial burden of studying abroad.
Global Education, Now in India
Leading international institutions, including the University of Aberdeen, University of Bristol, University of York, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Liverpool, and Victoria University, are setting up campuses in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.
In the initial phase, each campus will admit 200–250 students, with plans to expand annual intake to 1,000–1,200 students within the next five years. According to reports, the universities have already received over 10,000 applications for the upcoming academic session.
Same Degree, Lower Cost
One of the biggest advantages for Indian students is that these campuses will follow the same academic standards, curriculum, examinations, and evaluation systems as their home campuses abroad. Graduates will receive degrees from the respective foreign universities, making them internationally recognized.
At the same time, students are expected to save 30–40% on overall education costs compared to studying overseas, as they can avoid major expenses such as international travel, accommodation, and living costs.
Focus on Future-Ready Courses
During the initial phase, the foreign campuses will primarily offer programmes in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computer Science, and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. These fields have been chosen to align with global industry demand and India’s growing technology ecosystem.
Indore Talk Academics Insight
The arrival of foreign universities in India could redefine higher education by making globally recognized degrees more accessible and affordable. While students will benefit from international curricula without relocating abroad, the initiative is also expected to increase competition among Indian universities, encouraging greater emphasis on academic quality, research, innovation, and industry collaboration. For aspiring students, it opens a new pathway to earn a global qualification while staying closer to home.
