Apple iMac iPad

The artificial intelligence revolution is not only transforming technology, it is also making it more expensive.

Apple has announced a significant price hike for its iPads and MacBooks, with prices increasing by up to $300 in the United States and by as much as ₹1 lakh in India for certain premium configurations. The company attributes the increase to soaring costs of memory and storage chips, driven by the explosive demand for AI infrastructure worldwide.

According to Apple, data centers powering generative AI require massive amounts of high-performance memory. As chip manufacturers prioritize supplying AI giants such as NVIDIA, the availability of memory components for consumer electronics has tightened, pushing manufacturing costs to record levels.

The price revision affects several Apple products. The company’s entry-level laptop, Neo, will now start at $699 instead of $599. The 512GB MacBook Air has become $200 more expensive, while the 1TB MacBook Pro now costs $300 more. Apple has also raised prices for its HomePod smart speakers and Apple TV devices. Interestingly, iPhone prices remain unchanged—for now.

Industry analysts, however, believe iPhones may be next. With DRAM prices rising sharply and supply remaining constrained, manufacturers across the electronics industry are facing mounting pressure. Research firm TrendForce estimates that DRAM prices surged by nearly 98% in the first quarter of 2026, with further increases expected in the coming months. Experts have even coined the term “RAM-ageddon” to describe the unprecedented spike in memory prices.

Apple stated that it has absorbed rising component costs for as long as possible but has now reached a point where passing some of the burden to customers has become unavoidable. Despite Apple’s strong supplier relationships, the company has not been immune to the global chip shortage, although analysts believe some of its competitors have faced even steeper cost increases.

What This Means for Consumers

For buyers planning to purchase a MacBook or iPad, the new pricing means a significantly higher investment. Businesses, students, content creators, and professionals who rely on Apple devices may need to reassess their technology budgets. If chip shortages continue and AI infrastructure demand remains strong, industry experts expect the next wave of price revisions could include the iPhone as well.

The AI revolution is reshaping industries worldwide—but it is also changing the economics of consumer technology, making premium devices more expensive than ever before.
