China Education

China has made one of the biggest changes to its higher education system by discontinuing 12,200 undergraduate degree programmes between 2021 and 2025. In their place, universities have introduced 10,200 new courses that are better aligned with emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, digital economy, and intelligent manufacturing.

The decision comes at a time when AI is rapidly transforming industries and changing the skills employers expect from graduates. Courses in arts, management, humanities, and foreign languages have seen the highest number of closures, as many were found to have lower employment prospects in the current job market.

China’s education authorities say the move is aimed at reducing the gap between university education and industry needs. With youth unemployment remaining a concern and millions of graduates entering the workforce every year, universities are under pressure to offer programmes that improve students’ chances of finding jobs.

The impact of AI is already visible in many professions. Tasks such as designing, content creation, data analysis, and modelling are increasingly being assisted by AI tools, prompting universities to rethink what students should be learning. As a result, more students in China are also choosing vocational and skill-based education that offers direct pathways to employment.

What Does This Mean for Indian Students?

While India has not announced a similar overhaul, the message is clear: choosing a degree is no longer enough. Students must also focus on developing practical skills, digital literacy, internships, certifications, and the ability to adapt to new technologies.

The future job market will likely reward those who combine academic knowledge with continuous learning. Whether you’re studying engineering, commerce, arts, or management, staying updated with AI and industry trends could become just as important as earning the degree itself.

Indore Talk Insight

China’s bold decision is less about removing subjects and more about ensuring education stays relevant. As technology reshapes workplaces across the world, universities everywhere—including in India—may need to regularly update their curricula so that graduates are prepared not just for today’s jobs, but for the careers of tomorrow.
