In a significant reform aimed at strengthening postgraduate medical education, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that all PG Diploma medical courses will be discontinued from the 2027–28 academic session. These diploma programmes will be replaced with MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) degree courses across medical colleges in India.
The move is intended to bring India’s postgraduate medical education in line with global standards while providing aspiring doctors with stronger academic qualifications and improved career opportunities.
What Will Change?
Seats currently allocated to PG Diploma programmes will be converted into MD and MS degree seats. This means students seeking postgraduate medical education will have the opportunity to directly enroll in degree programmes instead of diploma courses.
According to the NMC, this transition will help produce better-trained specialist doctors and ensure a more uniform standard of medical education across the country.
Implementation Process Begins
To facilitate the transition, the Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has directed all medical colleges to begin the process of converting diploma seats into MD and MS seats.
Institutions will be required to apply to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) for approval. The NMC is also expected to launch a dedicated online portal to simplify the application and approval process for medical colleges.
Why Has NMC Taken This Decision?
The commission believes that maintaining both diploma and degree programmes in the same specialty has led to inconsistencies in postgraduate medical education. While some colleges offer both, others run only diploma courses despite having the required faculty, infrastructure, and patient load to support full-fledged degree programmes.
By upgrading diploma seats into MD and MS programmes, the NMC aims to make better use of existing resources while improving the quality of specialist training across India.
Indore Talk Insight
This reform marks a major shift in India’s medical education landscape. For future postgraduate medical aspirants, the change means greater access to internationally recognized degree qualifications instead of diploma certifications. While medical colleges will need to adapt their academic infrastructure and regulatory processes, students are likely to benefit from stronger clinical training, enhanced career prospects, and improved opportunities for specialization in the years ahead.
